Workshop Description:
ASF-UK’s Change by Design programme and the Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre (SLURC) are launching a call for a multidisciplinary group of volunteers to contribute to an action research programme addressing the needs and aspirations of low-income communities in Freetown.

The workshop will build on SLURC’s long term experience in action research, citizen engagement and advocacy, and on SLURC and ASF-UK’s collaborative work on participatory planning and design with communities in Dworzark and Cockle Bay—two settlements in Freetown dealing with inadequate housing and infrastructure and environmental risk. The aim is to develop tools that can support community-
led and community-managed settlement profiles; and design and test appropriate platforms for sharing this
data with community and citywide stakeholders. The workshop forms part of the Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality (KNOW) project in Freetown. KNOW is a 4-year research and capacity building programme led by The Bartlett Development Planning Unit of University College London. It aims to promote urban equality in cities across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Over two weeks, we will work closely with community members and city stakeholders, adapting the Change by Design methodology to develop frameworks for the analysis, visualisation and sharing of data at different scales. The workshop aims to contribute to realising SLURC’s vision of Equitable City Making in Freetown.
