The last two evening sessions… January 15, 2014
The Perseverance Tuesday 7th Janurary 7:00pm
After a sudden change of location, The Perseverance pub on Lamb’s Conduit Street was a great alternative for the first evening session of 2014. A positive turn up as well meant we filled up the small pub creating a good atmosphere.
The topic of co-operatives arose as around the corner from the pub is the People’s Supermarket, a local food focused co-operative aimed at working with the local community and farmers. This brought up again the ASF co-operate housing visit in Brighton, where we observed the different ways the housing scheme had been achieved and the level of community involvement at each co-op. Stemming off from the topic of co-operatives, self-build schemes were discussed as they are of interest to ASF due to the strong community led process that enabling the group to achieve affordable housing.
The individuals who joined us this evening also exchanged their architectural interests/involvements as well, ranging from being involved in a self-build in Plymouth to Architecture for Humanity’s Remakery project. Overall a very engaging evening session with a prominent theme of community involvement and led projects.
Candid Arts Tuesday 10th December 7.00pm
The Christmas ASF evening session was at the Candid Arts Cafe, a cosy tea cafe next door to the Candid Arts Trust, behind Angel station. Sat around a small candle lit table, we discussed architectural education and where people had studied. This brought up the design units at Oxford Brookes and Sheffield University which are taught by ASF members. The design units reflect upon ASF ethoses such as community and international development issues.
Recently ASF went to Brighton to understand a few of the co-operative housing schemes, and we discussed what we had learnt, as ASF potentially are interested in getting involved in national projects alongside the international projects.
