We are accepting applications for our forthcoming Change by Design workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The workshop is organised by ASF-UK in partnership with 1to1 – Agency of Engagement and counts as Stage B of the RIBA CPD accredited independent learning course Challenging Practice: Essentials for the Social Production of Habitat. The initiative is supported by the International Institute for Environment and Development and London Metropolitan University’s Centre for Urban and Built Ecologies.

CALL FOR WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS

ASF-UK’s Change by Design programme and 1to1 – Agency of Engagement are launching a call for a multidisciplinary group of action-research volunteers to address some of the housing challenges facing inner city Johannesburg.

The workshop will focus on a range of medium- to high-rise buildings dealing with inadequate housing conditions and the risk of displacement. Building upon 1to1’s ongoing activities and partnerships with advocacy groups and grassroots leadership, our aim will be to support local residents and their organisations in their efforts to create fairer living conditions in the area.

Participants will take part in a one-day online symposium in December 2022 and a one-week live workshop in Johannesburg in January 2023. Throughout this period, we will work closely with 1to1 – Agency of Engagement and their civil society partners, adapting the Change by Design methodology to explore how community-led design and planning can contribute to advancing housing justice in inner-city Johannesburg.

Participants to the workshop will be awarded a Challenging Practice Stage B certificate.

Places are limited. Applicants holding a Challenging Practice Stage A certificate, including those who have signed up to attend the next Challenging Practice Seminar in October, will be given priority.
