Challenging Practice Stage A Seminar - October 2022

On 22–23 October 2022, ASF-UK will host a special edition of our flagship Challenging Practice seminar, exploring how community-led design and planning can promote human development.

The seminar counts as Stage A of the RIBA CPD accredited, independent learning course Challenging Practice: Essentials for the Social Production of Habitat.

For this special edition, ASF-UK is partnering up with the International Institute for Environment and Development and The Bartlett Development Planning Unit of University College London to explore the book Cities for Human Development with the author and ASF-UK Advisor Dr Alexandre Apsan Frediani.

Through two days of facilitated discussion based on real case studies, the seminar will examine what it means to address city-making from the lens of the capability approach. What if we understand cities not as engines of growth, but of human development? What if we see cities not for what they are, but what they do to people and nature? And what role can design and planning play in creating cities that promote human development?

The event will be preceded by a public discussion of the book on the evening of Friday 21st October, as part of The Bartlett DPU Dialogues in Development lecture series.

Participants to the two-day seminar will be awarded a Challenging Practice Stage A certificate and will have priority access to the ten-day Stage B workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa hosted by ASF-UK and 1to1 – Agency of Engagement in January 2023.
