Re-imagining urban housing through participatory design in Cape Town

Between 2015-2018, ASF-UK ran three workshops in Cape Town, South Africa, in partnership with Development Action Group (DAG) with support from 1-1 Agency of Engagement.

In July 2018, ASF-UK ran a two week Change by Design Workshop ‘Re-imagining urban housing through participatory design in Cape Town’ in Cape Town in partnership with the Development Action Group (DAG) and supported by 1-1 Agency.  Through close collaboration with local partners, the team of twenty, made up of ASF-UK participants and facilitators, engaged in participatory engagements to explore how socio-spatial justice could be embedded in urban processes within the emerging small-scale rental housing sector.

The engagements within the field accumulated into the development of a toolkit for DAG to take forward in future discussions with small scale rental housing developers.  This was presented at a final event which brought together a range of stakeholders including local community based organisations, local government and practitioners to discuss and reflect on the current and future impact of the small-scale rental housing sector locally and citywide.
