Building Community Power for Affordable Housing
In Redbridge, East London, Caroline—a teacher and community organiser with TELCO—joined forces with ASF-UK to confront the challenges of displacement and lack of affordable housing following the 2012 Olympics.
Through Reclaiming Regeneration, a workshop series co-led by ASF-UK and TELCO, 30 organisers from across East London gained the tools to understand planning systems, advocate for community needs, and take collective action. The result:
✔️ Political commitment for 250 Community Land Trust (CLT) homes
✔️ A community-led housing brief developed with planners and architects
✔️ Planning approval for Redbridge’s first CLT homes in 2021
This partnership laid the groundwork for a growing housing justice movement, showing how communities can shape regeneration on their own terms.
