Co-creating Skills and Coalitions for Equitable Urban Change

In Cape Town, where spatial inequality remains a legacy of apartheid, DAG Programme Director Helen partnered with ASF-UK to strengthen community-led planning.

Between 2015 and 2019, a series of Change by Design workshops brought together practitioners, students, residents, and city officials to co-develop strategies around land access, housing, and inclusive regeneration.

Key outcomes included:

✔️ A charter for inclusive regeneration in Woodstock
✔️ The launch of DAG’s Reimagining Neighbourhoods programme
✔️ The creation of the Contractor and Developer Academy (CDA), supporting small-scale developers in townships

These collaborations helped build skills, shape policy dialogue, and form lasting coalitions for equitable urban change in Cape Town.
