Over the past two years, ASF-UK and 1to1 Agency of Engagement have been working alongside residents of inner-city Johannesburg through the Change by Design workshop series (2023–2025). This initiative champions the right to adequate housing for communities facing insecure, unaffordable, and unstable living conditions.

We are proud to share the first two reports from this series:

  • The Right to Home explores what adequate housing might mean in inner-city Johannesburg, from security of tenure to cultural adequacy, and highlights the roles of governments and civil society in advancing residents’ rights
  • Making Home tells stories of resilience and care in the city’s informally occupied buildings, showing how residents manage, repair, and sustain their homes despite the systemic barriers they face.

Together, these reports amplify grassroots voices and call for more just and inclusive housing futures.
